An hour and a half into my shift, I called up a girl whom I'd never talked to before. It'd been a few days since I had to talk to anyone other than my regulars, and generally I'm not fond of having to introduce myself all over again to someone new, but this was well worth it. When I rang her, I thought she was trying to adjust something on her laptop, or was having trouble multitasking: she had her webcam on, and oftentimes she would lean forward, such that all I would see was the top of her head inches away from the camera. I also noticed that she was slurring a few words here and there. At times, I couldn't make much of what she was saying, but I thought little of it because this tends to happen with some students.
A few minutes later, her friend (or roomie, or whatever) picked up the laptop, and said to me, all while occasionally glancing at her friend, So sorry, ...
